Four voices in thirty bars — a piece about childhood, written for grown-up hands.
Schumann wrote the thirteen short pieces of Kinderszenen in 1838, during the years he spent fighting Clara Wieck’s father for permission to marry her. The title means scenes from childhood, and Schumann was careful about what that meant: these are not pieces for children to play, but an adult’s recollections of having been one. Träumerei — dreaming — is the seventh, and became the most famous single page he wrote.
It lasts about two and a half minutes and is barely more than a page: a rising phrase in F major, answered three times with different harmony beneath it, over a texture that looks like a simple accompaniment and is in fact four independent voices moving at once. In Germany the piece has a second life as music of remembrance, played at memorials, and it is the standard encore of half the pianists who ever recorded Schumann.
Träumerei is the classic example of a piece that is easy to read and hard to play. Nothing in it is fast and no interval is extreme, but there are four lines to keep apart, several of them inside one hand, and the piece only works if the top line sings while the inner voices support it without being heard as melody. The left hand holds and stretches rather than strikes. Its rubato is written into the phrasing — the slowing at the end of each phrase is part of the sense, not an indulgence.
One hand at a time is unusually revealing here, because each hand alone is already two voices. Take it slowly and listen for which note you are actually making loudest. That, rather than the notes, is the whole exercise.
